です

です is the polite copula — the polite-register marker that follows nouns and na-adjectives to form a complete predicate, and i-adjectives to add politeness without changing meaning.

With nouns: 学生です — "[I] am a student." With na-adjectives: 静かです — "[it] is quiet." With i-adjectives: 寒いです — "[it] is cold" (note: 寒い alone is already a complete predicate; です here is purely a politeness marker, not a grammatical "is").

です negates to じゃない / ではない (plain) or じゃありません / ではありません (polite). Past tense: でした (polite past affirmative), じゃなかった / ではなかったです (polite past negative). I-adjectives don't use です for past or negative — they conjugate themselves: 寒かったです, 寒くないです — adding です only for politeness.

The plain-form counterpart of です is だ. Beginners learn です first; だ comes with the plain-form register.
