〜ない

〜ない is the plain negative — "doesn't do X." 食べない = "[I] don't eat." Polite negative is 食べません; plain is 食べない.

Conjugation by verb class:
• Ichidan: drop る → add ない (食べる → 食べない, 見る → 見ない)
• Godan: the う/く/す/つ/etc. stem shifts to the あ-row, then ない is added (書く → 書かない, 待つ → 待たない, 飲む → 飲まない). The one tricky case is う-final godan: 買う → 買わない (not 買あない — the "a" surfaces as わ).
• Irregular: 来る → 来ない, する → しない, ある → ない (the verb "to exist" is suppletive — "is not" is just ない, no あらない).

〜ない itself behaves like an i-adjective: past negative is 〜なかった (食べなかった), te-form is 〜なくて, conditional is 〜なければ.

The "い" at the end of ない drops in some contracted forms: 食べないで ("without eating," "don't eat [imperative]"). And in casual speech ない often surfaces as ん in negative questions and tags: 知らん, 行かん.
