Tsugi no asa, rina wa mise no hito ga ichimai no nuno de hako o tsutsumu no o mimashita.

The next morning, Rina saw a shopkeeper wrapping a box in a piece of cloth.

Nuno no kado o musubu to, motsu tokoro ga dekimashita.

Tying the corners of the cloth made a handle.

"Fukuro ni mo naru n desu ka" to kiku to, mise no hito wa musubikata o yukkuri misete kuremashita.

When she asked, "Can it become a bag too?" the shopkeeper slowly showed her how to tie it.

Kono you ni mono o tsutsumu nuno o, furoshiki to iimasu.

A cloth used to wrap things this way is called a furoshiki.

Tsutsumu koto ni wa, ikutsu ka no yakume ga arimasu.

Wrapping serves several purposes.

Mono o mamoru.

Protecting things.

Hakobiyasuku suru.

Making them easier to carry.

Conveying care and respect to the recipient.

Even the same cloth can be used differently to suit the shape of a box.

Rina liked how it could be folded up small when not in use.

Tadashi, kirei ni tsutsumeba tsutsumu hodo yoi, to iu wake de wa arimasen.

However, more elaborate wrapping is not necessarily better.

Kami ya purasuchikku o tsukai sugireba, gomi ga fuemasu.

If you use too much paper or plastic, you create more rubbish.

Nando mo tsukaeru mono de mo, katta mama tsukawanakereba, sono yosa wa ikasemasen.

Even reusable items cannot live up to their potential if you buy them and never use them.

Taisetsu na no wa, mono no namae yori, jissai ni dou tsukau ka desu.

What matters is how you actually use something, more than its name.

Betsu no mise de wa, furui dougu ga naosarete imashita.

At another shop, old tools were being repaired.

Naoto wa "mottainai" to iu kotoba o oshiemashita.

Naoto taught her the word "mottainai."

It expresses regret when something still usable or potentially useful is wasted.

"Mottainai" wa, nihonjin zen'in ga itsumo mono o taisetsu ni suru, to iu shouko de wa arimasen.

"Mottainai" is not proof that every Japanese person always takes good care of things.

Seikatsu no naka de omoidashitai kangae no hitotsu desu.

It is one idea to keep in mind in daily life.

Instead of buying lots of new things, Rina thought of some unused cloth at home.

"Kaettara, ichido tsutsunde miyou".

"When I get home, I will try wrapping something in it."

Tabi de mochikaereru no wa, o miyage dake de wa arimasen.

Souvenirs are not the only things you can bring home from a trip.

You can also bring home a way of seeing things at home through different eyes.
